for the longest time, klaus stares at the message, contemplates how to answer, waffles between telling the truth or a full-blown lie. eventually, he lands somewhere in-between, being straightforward while fudging the truth a little.]

[ It's a few days after the battle and someone's on a mission to check in with the people she's most concerned with. Klaus hadn't seemed like a fighter, though for all she knows that isn't true, and Neria gives him a buzz anyway.

The message comes one night, a few hours before midnight. ]

Klaus? It's Neria.

[ Since the name won't be obvious. ]

I didn't see you out there but I wanted to make certain you're still with us.

[neria, you're way too good of a person, he doesn't deserve you— and man, she doesn't even know the half of it... which is good because if she did, who knows how she'd react? he's not ready to lose one of his potential friends (especially after finding out sal's gone).

how funny to learn he isn't the only person who sends messages at ungodly hours of the night, though.]

I'm all right. I was on the front lines for quite a bit. I've healed up with some help already. Were you fighting too?

some shit i've just decided to let heal naturally

so i went to sleep last night and my neck was kind of itchy
i didn't really think much of it but i woke up this morning and

[ V is a tad backwards in his concerns. Those closest to him he feels no particular need to check in on. He'll see them, they'll be there; maybe that's naive. It's the people around the periphery who he wouldn't have expected to see that he finds himself curiously circling around in his thoughts. ]

[backward or not, klaus oddly appreciates the gesture? especially considering v and he are within opposite factions and very well could've been opposite each other on the battlefield.]

I suppose that depends on how poorly I looked at the time.

[ Pretty poorly. He hadn't regained most of his familiars yet, at that dance.... and they made up most of his power. He's a lot sharper now that he's recovered them all. ]

[ It has been a week. V has had time to... cool down. To apologize to Constantin for all the strange things he said and did while infatuated with him, to upgrade his opinion of fair folk magic to 'annoying' with Clary, to hear about the normal lives of 26 year-olds from Lottie. He feels a little lucky that he has people around willing to talk about navigating life with him. He needs it.

He still spends a long time deciding what to say though. Nothing sounds quite right. So eventually he just sighs and says what he thinks of. He avoids the letter format that he might have otherwise used, formality isn't what he intends. ]

You looked so concerned, but I know things were out of your control.

All of our lives are complicated, but my complications have prevented me from building relationships with anyone. That changed when I came here. Everything about it is still very new to me, certainly anything physical.

I'm barely even a passable friend much of the time. I'm inattentive and selfish and dreary and my sense of humor is cruel. And Griffon will never stop heckling you.

I understand if that's off-putting.

[let's be honest here, a small part of klaus hadn't been expecting to hear anything back from v, let alone only a week's worth of time. although he wouldn't have ever assumed v might've talked to anyone else about the little... problem they had with the flower, even if he didn't use any names. not as if klaus knows if he did or not, of course, but it's something he'd feel safe making an assumption about.

when he gets the message, it's somewhat surprising at first, though after he reads it, the bizarre irony of things v's said has him smirking. probably best they aren't face-to-face, else it might give the wrong impression.]

things were out of both our hands in that situation
i should've known whenever shit got a little extra heated that something was up

honestly v i hope you aren't telling me all of this in an attempt to push me away
because that's the exact opposite of what's going to happen
i don't mind all of that or that you've got this cackling shitbird constantly giving people hell... myself included
i'm selfish too y'know and always have my head in the clouds
also who doesn't have a little dark humor? makes things more interesting in my opinion

and while it may be off-putting to some people it'll take a whole lot more than that to chase me off

you're easy to talk to and have a sense of humor and are real fucking smart
not to mention you're super hot and have one of the most amazing voices i've ever heard in my entire life
